Studied in Glasgow under Thomas Thomson F.R.S. 1811 and at Paris under J. B. A. Dumas (For. Mem R. S. 1840). Attended a medical course at Trinity College, Dublin and at Belfast and Edinburgh where in 1835 he took M. R. C. S. diploma and M. D. degree. Later practiced medicine in Belfast and taught chemistry in the Royal Belfast Academic Institution.
